Woman claims age discrimination, files suit against nonprofit

Age discrimination remains a real problem at companies throughout the United States, including those in Texas. A woman at a company in a different state recently claimed that she was terminated as a result of age discrimination. The woman said the boss who did the firing had mentioned the need to hire energetic women who were in their 20s.

The situation took place at a nonprofit society that provides aid to children. The former CEO of the nonprofit is accused of engaging in age discrimination against the 61-year-old woman. The woman was fired even though he had recognized her success in fundraising and her 24-year stint at the organization. In fact, she had helped the society to boost their fundraising by a whopping 32 percent during a recent two-year period.

However, according to the woman's lawsuit, she was told that she was being fired because some trustees did not approve of her work. The Children's Aid Society in New York used an investigator to look into the matter but found no information to support her allegations, it said. As a result of the situation, she says she needed to use a monitor for her heart because of the stress she experienced from being terminated.

In this situation, the woman who claims to have been discriminated against is seeking damages and back pay. If age discrimination is proved to have taken place, other remedies also may result from such a case, such as the woman's being allowed to return to her previous position. Age discrimination is prohibited in Texas and at the federal level, so a person who is treated unfairly because of his or her age may seek justice and make sure that his or her rights are protected.
