Texas employee sues company for workplace discrimination

Employers often wish to hire a wide range of workers so that their companies benefit from having a combination of varied yet strong skill sets. They also wish to meet diversity standards, which can reflect positively on their businesses. Some companies, however, struggle to treat people of all backgrounds equally, or they mistreat employees based on gender. This is the type of workplace discrimination situation that one employee is facing in Texas.

A female employee recently filed a suit against her company Lanxess Corp. She claimed that the company fired her after she complained about gender discrimination at the company. The woman worked as an operator technician and said that she was regularly told that women were not supposed to be in her type of role.

The woman constantly complained about the discrimination to her managers, she said. However, her male managers only gave her poor evaluations. She later ended up on probation after being blamed for another employee's violation of company rules, and she then was suspended and terminated, she said.

It is illegal for a company to mistreat an employee due to his or her gender. An employer can also be held liable if the employees hired are the ones who are creating the hostile environment for members of a certain gender. A successfully litigated workplace discrimination lawsuit filed against such an employer may result in various remedies. These may include compensatory damages for emotional pain and suffering and the loss of enjoyment of life along with exemplary damages in Texas. An employee who believes that he or she has been discriminated against can certainly protect his or her rights according to federal anti-discrimination law.
