Workplace discrimination claim filed against Texas university

Being fired from a job can be a devastating experience for any employee in Texas, even if the person was at fault. However, being terminated from a job simply because of the color of one's skin or due to one's gender can be infuriating. This behavior, known as workplace discrimination, is also illegal. This is the situation that one woman in Texas allegedly faced.

In this scenario, a former female life sciences professor said she was improperly fired from her position at the University of Houston. She recently filed a lawsuit against the institution, claiming that it had engaged in employment discrimination. She said the situation started when an assistant professor began to harass her.

The woman claimed that the assistant professor prevented her from using lab equipment and also yelled at her. She pursued tenure but believes that she was denied tenure due to being a Hispanic female. The woman now is seeking back pay along with benefits and damages.

Federal law bans employers from mistreating people because of their race or gender. When this happens, the person who has been harassed and even demoted or terminated as a result of workplace discrimination may choose to file a claim against the alleged offending employer. Each case is different, but various reparations can result based on the circumstances of each case, including reinstatement of a job or even a promotion. The best first step in such a case in Texas is to facilitate a thorough review of the underlying facts regarding a race or age discrimination complaint.
